BODY LANGUAGE
Traditionally, Bulgarians nod their heads to indicate a "no" and shake their heads side-to-side to show agreement. However, some younger people do things the "Western" way, thus increasing the possibility of misunderstandings.
LOST IN TRANSLATION
Some useful phrases you are likely to need as soon as you enter Bulgaria:
"Good morning" - "Dobro utro"
"Good afternoon" - "Dobur den"
"Good evening" - "Dobur vecher"
"Write me a ticket, I am not going to give you any cash"-"Napishete mi akt, nyama da vi dam pari v broy"
"I would like another shopska salad" - "Oshte edna shopska, molya"
"I love you" - "Obicham te"
"Another rakiya, please" - "Oshte edna rakiya, molya"
" I want to marry you and bring you back to the States" -
"Iskam da se ozhenya za teb i da te zaveda v shtatite"
"This way out" - "Izhodut e nasam"
TONGUE TWISTERS
Surprise your Bulgarian friends by repeating the name "Ilarion Makariopolski" a dozen times in quick succession.
Alternatively, you may say (with a grin):
"Petar plet plete, prez tri pleta preplita, pleti Petre pleti"
