    There are no direct flights to Bulgaria from the USA or Canada, nor any Balkan Bulgarian airline offices in either country, but other airlines offer indirect flights to Sofia via a European airport, and discount travel companies can create round-trip itineraries involving two, three or even four different carriers. The permutations are virtually endless, as even slightly altering your flight dates can greatly affect what's on offer, but you're very unlikely to get an onward connection to Sofia the same day, so an overnight stopover has to be factored into your cost-benefit analysis.
   Given all that, the following return fares are only examples of what you might find online or by calling discount travel companies. Fares from New York can be as little as US1 in low season (flying LOT via Warsaw), rising to US7 in high season (also on LOT); from Los Angeles US14 in low season (Alitalia/Balkan/Air France) and US51 in high season (Virgin/Balkan /Lufthansa). Flights from Miami cost less in summer (US61 Air France/Balkan) than in winter (US77 United/Balkan). Other airlines to consider for one or both stages of the outward and/or return flights are Czech Airlines via Prague, Malev via Budapest or Austrian Airlines via Vienna, which give you an opportunity to stopover in their delightful home cities.
   The choice of package tours to Bulgaria available in the US or Canada is limited, and they are often priced as land-only, excluding the cost of airfares from the US to Sofia or a starting point like London. Compare what's on offer from tour operators in Britain and search for a transatlantic flight yourself, and you could get a better deal.
